Group Therapy

A form of psychotherapy where a group of people are treated together by either a single therapist or a team of therapists, group therapy helps everyone in the group. Group therapy can loosely refer to cognitive behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy. Most often, however, group therapy is psychodynamic group therapy where interpersonal relationships are studied and participants learn to change, examine and explore those relationships.

Looking at group therapy with a larger concept, it can also include support groups or groups designed for skills training, such as relaxation, social skills or anger management. There can be groups that are focused on specialized treatment forms, such as dance therapy, music therapy and art therapy. There are many different settings for group therapy, including out-patient treatment centers as well as in-patient treatment facilities.
